The Holy Spirit and prophetic understanding.
“No prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” 2Peter 1:20, 21, NRSV. Biblical prophecy is given to glorify God. When man studies the Bible prophecies and gives “his interpretation,” it takes from God the reason for the prophecy. Prophecy is not for the edification of man, but to show the power of the true God who knows the beginning from the end (that is His name) and shares that saving power with humanity. Therefore a true knowledge of prophecy, and the Bible for that matter, can only be gained by the guidance of the Spirit, for it is the Spirit that caused men to write of the Truth.
The more a person studies Daniel and Revelation, the more we come to the conclusion that they are to be taken very seriously. The Truth of these prophecies is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.” 2Tim 3:16, ERV.
Through His Holy Spirit the voice of God comes to us continually in warning and instruction, to confirm the faith of the believers in the spirit of prophecy, —“the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Rev 19:10. Our confidence in that which comes to us as messages inspired by God is based on our faith in God and His Word, as well as upon the convicting work of the Holy Spirit on our hearts. It is also based upon our observation of fulfilled and fulfilling prophecy, and also as the prophetic messages are lived out in our own lives as well as in the lives of others.
Christ appeared in person to both Daniel and John when giving them the prophecies of the events of the last days, and He says to us, “Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Rev 1:17, 18. “Fear not. . . for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words (to help you understand).” Dan 10:12. “The Holy Scriptures” “are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” 2Tim 3:15.

Jesus in Revelation.
Sometimes called the Apocalypse, the title is perceived as the unveiling of hidden prophecies, and it is because of this title that some people misunderstand and/or don’t even try to understand the book of Revelation. The first verse (Rev 1:1) gives the title and the reason of the book, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass.” It is when we focus on Jesus in the book of Revelation that we can properly interpret the prophecies. Of course Jesus is the author of the book, but we see Jesus as the High Priest (Rev 1:12-16) of the Heavenly Sanctuary, officiating both in the Holy (Rev 1:3) and Most Holy (Rev 5:5; 10:1). We see Him as a Lion (Rev 5:5), yet He is the Lamb of God (Rev 5:6). It is the Lamb which takes the sealed book from the Father’s right hand (Rev 5:1, 7), and it is the Lamb that opens the seven seals (Rev 6:1). We are privileged to see Jesus as our High Priest Mediator (Rev 8:3, 4) on the Day of Atonement, —a day of judgment (Rev 11:1, 2; 14:7).
